The Faroe Islands Tourist Board were unable to confirm that a visit was about to take place but reported that Bill Clinton and the Swede Hans Blix, a former UN weapons inspector in Iraq, were apparently taking part in a conference at Nordic House in the Faroese capital of Tórshavn on 24 May.
If the visit goes ahead the Faroes will be the smallest nation that former President Clinton has ever visited and spoken to.
A visit from two such famous people would benefit the Faroes politically as well as providing a welcome boost for their industry and tourism. Faroese businesses recognise the importance and potential of an exclusive visit like this and there has been strong support for the proposal to bring the two men to the Faroe Islands.
According to the Faroes Prime Minister Jóannes Eidisgaard ”This must be one of the most exclusive visitors the Faroes have ever received. Clinton is an incredibly charismatic person and an excellent speaker. I’m in no doubt that a visit to the Faroes by such a famous personality will be of great importance and help make the Faroe Islands known to the rest of the world”. Jan Mortensen, director of the House of Industry said
”Such a visit proves that we are a part of the internationalisation trend, and if we are able to fully exploit this opportunity Faroese industry and tourism will receive a significant boost”.
The Faroese employers association also welcomed the opportunity that a visit by two such high profile people would bring. ”This is the ultimate confirmation that the Faroe Islands are a part of the global world”.
The agenda for the conference has yet to be agreed, but the primary goal is to provide people with a good experience. The House of Industry has been working on plans to invite Clinton since last autumn and the organisers say further details about the programme for the visit will be announced in the near future.
