Utrecht has a long and interesting history, and the old inner-city is rich with canals, cellars, historical buildings and ancient churches. It offers a range of attractions and places of interest so whether visiting for the day or for the week, there is much to see and do. Great Places to Visit in Utrecht: for Families and ChildrenNicolaaskerkhof 10, Tel. +31 (0)30-2362362, Tuesday to Sunday 11.00 - 17.00 The Centraal Museum is the oldest municipal museum in the Netherlands. It has a permanent exhibition on Dick Bruna and Miffy. It also has a large art collection including Rietveld designs and usually several temporary exhibitions. Nationaal Museum van Speelklok Steenweg 6, Tel. +31 (0)30 231 27 89, Tuesday to Sunday 10.00 - 17.00 This is a museum on all kinds of mechanical music instruments, including carillon clocks, musical boxes, pianolas, belly organs, orchestrions, and full-size street, fairground and dance hall organs. Maliebaanstation, Tel.+31 (0)30-2306206, Tuesday to Sunday 10.00 - 17.00 This is the original station of Utrecht and is now the Dutch Railway Museum. This is a living history museum covering steam railway history and wide range of large displays. Other Places of Interest to Visit in The NetherlandsDom Church A Gothic church built between 1284 and 1520. After a hurricane in 1674, the nave collapsed, and the Domtoren (Bell Tower) and the church are now separated by the Domplein (Dom Square). The interior of the church was stripped during Reformation, but the exterior remains a lavishly decorated example of Dutch Gothic architecture. The Domtoren Is 112 metres tall and is the highest church tower in the Netherlands. Visitors can climb the stairs to see the magnificent view over the city. Next to the Dom church is the Cloister Garden, a small gardens to sit down and relax. The Oudegracht This is a canal going through the centre of the city, lined with shops and restaurants. The canal is unique because of its many picturesque cellars on water level. Originally used for storage and commerce today they contain a range of restaurants, pubs and terraces. Prins Hendriklaan 50, Open Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Reservations are strongly recommended. This house was designed by Gerrit Rietveld in 1923-1924. It displays a range of art exhibits and artifacts. Nieuwstraat 106, Tel: + 31 (0)30 2538008, Tuesday to Sunday 11.00 - 17.00 This is the museum of the city university. Utrecht is a fascinating city, rich with history and culture. The city can be viewed on foot, bike or by canal boat.
